Following the success of our Reading Beach Club, CCSA in 2018 introduced the Pen Pal Program for Grades 1 and 2. The program reconnects students and Storytellers through letter-writing, but is not limited to RBC Storytellers.

Pen Pal helps our children to develop written communication skills and encourages intergenerational relationships. Although it’s an organized way for Storytellers to stay in touch with students as they grow and mature, Pen Pals don’t need to have been Reading Beach Storytellers.

Many CCSA students benefit from additional support, whether in academic areas (reading, writing, math) or in developing positive social skills. Classroom volunteers work with these students one-to-one under the direction of the classroom teacher.

Volunteers in this program often continue year after year, either with the same classroom teacher or with the same student. We strongly recommend for a commitment of at least one hour per week to work with a classroom and/or student.

We offer numerous after school clubs year round. Volunteers are always welcome to tutor and help with homework, suggest a club that they might lead, or to support an existing club. After school clubs run from 4–5:30pm.

We welcome visitors to classrooms to present about their profession, a recent trip, or other area of expertise that relates to curriculum topics.

We try to provide multiple field trip opportunities to students in every grade. Many of these come about through volunteers bringing ideas and connections to us that help to make experiences beyond the classroom viable and affordable.

The Chester Fund aims to arrange at least one fundraising event each year. We also welcome volunteers to support with our Fall and Spring Mailings which includes addressing, stuffing and sealing envelopes, writing handwritten notes, and sharing news of CCSA with friends.

Some of our volunteers visit CCSA to cheer on our students at after-school sports events, or to show support by attending creative performances and exhibitions. We’ll be pleased to keep you notified in advance of school events throughout the year, including sporting events, art shows, and dance, theatre and music performances.
